Prospecting Idaho: New Yurt Build!

The Smith Crew gets it done up in the Prospecting Idaho Backcountry zone. Fall is a time for winter preparation and the crew rallies to get the yurt up before the first snow. Bobby Brown’s triumphant return to Smiley Creek

In March of 2010, Bobby Brown rolled into the Smith zone fresh off an amazing contest season where he became the first skier to ever win 2 gold medals at one X Games. After warming up on a couple of big jumps, Bobby hit a smaller jump, overshot the landing, and broke his back in 2 places. In March of 2011, Bobby made his return to Smiley Creek, but this time the results were much different.

Ski Team heads to Smiley Creek, shreds the Cirque

Towards the end of February, Smith Ski Team athletes Tim Durtschi, Tyler Ceccanti and Cody Barnhill rolled into the area with high hopes. Not only were they the first skiers to get a crack at the massive jumps in Smith’s private backcountry zone, but the snow was deep and the forecast called for sun. With dozens of fresh, snowcat built jumps just begging to be hit, the trio of shreds did what any righteous group of skiers would do–forget about the jumps and head straight for the lines and natural features of the Cirque.

Mineshaft Madness

 

Let me start this story by saying that two hours prior to the session on the mineshaft jump, I broke my tailbone. Sometimes a day of snowboarding can turn into a real pain in the ass. Anyway, when Shayne Pospisil and Austin Smith came into the yurt where I was asleep on my stomach and said they wanted to hit the mineshaft, I couldn’t argue. Sure, I could barely walk, but my argument would have been a weak one. For starters, the kicker was already built, the landing full of fresh, and having a hurt ass only makes you want to stay on your feet. Alright, the session was on!
