Smith Optics Pursues More Sustainable Products
Introducing “Evolve”
Ketchum, ID (November 31,2007) Since we started making goggles in 1965, Smith loyalists have prayed for snow, but what if that snow never came? We realize some of our processes may jeopardize the very climate we love and are endeavoring to protect it through our own actions. This effort has been appropriately named, “Evolve”, because if we don’t, humankind never will.
As the world’s leading goggle and helmet manufacturer we must precipitate change toward a cleaner, healthier industry and future. It is our responsibility to explore new ways to create products so coming generations will have a world in which to get their shred on. Big journeys start with the first step and Smith’s path towards a cleaner and healthier planet begins with Evolve.
Utilizing the waste created by other companies Smith is creating fresh produce. Every Smith Evolve Goggle frame is created of unused, reground excess material from the medical industry. Ninety-six percent of each Evolve goggle frame will utilize high grade polyurethane excess generated in the creation of other products. Only four percent of each goggle will be made of new material in this initial effort to reduce our overall impact. Cosmetic treatments such as badges and patches will be made of bamboo in lieu of the industry standard petroleum based rubbers and plastics.
Initially, Smith Evolve Helmets, will be using a reduced net quantity of synthetic materials as we explore renewable fibers and polymers. Our helmet liners will be using one such fiber technology, Cocona, a material made of coconut husks. This organic food industry waste boasts highly odor resistant and temperature regulating properties– a perfect match for your head and an ideal replacement for more synthetic applications. Overall packaging mass has been minimized to the fullest extent and will be made from 85% post consumer and 100% recycled wood and paper fibers, using vegetable based inks for all printing.
The Evolve Collection features the I/O goggle ($180), the Phenom goggle ($150) and the Prodigy goggle ($135). The Variant and Variant Brim helmets ($160) and Hustle helmet ($120) round out this unique quiver of Smith’s high end product offering. This is just a start and we hope eventually our pursuit of eco-friendly business practices and products will come to encompass our entire line.
Winter is coming, and with every passing season, Smith Evolve grows more necessary.

SEATTLE, Wash. (Jan. 1, 2008) – Soon to be dropping into the eager hands of fashion hungry CAPPEL Apparel and Smith Optics have announced the two companies will be collaborating on the limited edition Smith Exclusivo Collection of goggles and helmets for Winter 2008/09. The Exclusivo Collection, which this coming season will combine Smith’s smooth styling with CAPPEL’s unique materials and patterns, is designed as an antidote to the growing malaise toward snow-culture fashion.
“Linking Cappel’s insane sense of style to our super solid helmet and goggle program provides both of us unique creative opportunities to push the needle and offer an unmatched product collection,” said Smith’s VP of product and design Eric Carlson.
In tune with Exclusivo’s limited edition status, the collection will only be available in select core shops. The Exclusivo Collection for 2008/09 will feature Smith’s I/O, Phenom, Prodigy and Heiress snow goggles and their Holt and Hustle snow helmets. GO SPEED RACER!
Smith Optics Introduces the Upstart
Ketchum, ID (January 1, 2008) As snow helmets become as commonplace in the junior market as the buck twenty-five stuffed into their pockets for hot chocolate, Smith Optics is stepping up the game for the ankle biter set, and is excited to introduce the Upstart.
“We recognized the need in the market for a junior helmet which is distinctly cool in design and meets the performance and price expectations of other parents,” said Smith vp of product and design and parent of two, Eric Carlson. “We are confident that the Upstart is the answer.”
The Upstart is a helmet that will make the big kids jealous for a change. In a quest to eliminate the ice cream headache-inducing “gaper gap” (the space created between poorly fitted helmet and goggle combo), the Upstart’s design ensures snug helmet/goggle integration, complimented by Smith’s AirEvac™ ventilation system to keep goggles fog-free during even the most severe of snowball salvos. Junior will be stoked on the furry Tricot liner which offers maximum warmth and comfort combined with Smith’s HFS (Helmet Fit System), an integrated adjustable fit system which guarantees a snug and proper fit. The Upstart features Smith’s Bombshell™ ABS construction with full ear coverage and a Goggle Lock™ to keep the little dude’s peepers from flying off on the chair lift. As parents, we know kids are prone to lose gear, so Smith has placed a “My Name Is” placard on the back of the helmet where indelible ink can make sure that if set free, the Upstart finds its way home again.
The Smith Upstart comes in one size fits all (fitting heads 48-53 cm in circumference), meets ASTM F 2040 and EN 1077 safety standards and weighs in at 445 grams. Available in black, white, red, lavender, yellow stars and blue wrestlers color/graphic combinations, the Upstart’s suggested retail price is $60.
