Snow Helmets

What is a Mips helmet, and do I need one?

Mips is a thin, low-friction layer inside the helmet that shifts slightly during angled impacts, redirecting twisting force away from your brain. Since most real-world crashes involve some rotation, not just a straight hit, Mips is worth it for anyone spending time on the mountain, whether you’re a casual skier or more advanced. Safety is the foundation of every Smith helmet, and Mips adds a meaningful layer of protection.

How should a snow helmet fit?

A snow helmet should fit snug but not tight. It should sit level on your head, cover your forehead without slipping over your eyes, and stay put when you shake your head side to side and up and down. If it wobbles or pinches, try the next size.

How do I measure my head for the right helmet size?

To measure yourself for a snow helmet, grab a soft tape measure and wrap it around the widest part of your head, about an inch above your eyebrows and just over your ears, then record that number in centimeters. No tape measure handy? Run a piece of string around the same spot, mark where it meets, and lay it against a ruler. Once you have your measurement, check it against the Smith Optics size-specific helmet chart to find your fit.

Is there a difference between a ski helmet and a snowboard helmet?

No, there isn't a difference between a ski helmet and a snowboard helmet. Smith Optics snow helmets work for both skiing and snowboarding, so there's no separate ski-specific or snowboard-specific version to choose between. Pick based on fit, features, and style rather than the sport.

How often should I replace my snow helmet?

Replace your helmet every five years of active use or 10 years from the date of manufacture, whichever comes first. Swap it out right away if it takes a hard impact or shows any cracks or damage, even if it looks fine on the outside.

Do Smith Optics snow helmets work with goggles?

Yes. Smith Optics helmets and goggles are designed to work together for a gap-free fit and smooth airflow that helps keep your goggles from fogging. When you try a helmet on, wear your goggles too to check the fit across your forehead.

Are Smith Optics snow helmets safety certified?

Yes. Smith Optics snow helmets are built and tested to recognized snow-sports safety standards, including ASTM F2040 and CE EN 1077.
