Portland Crit Racing with Ama Nsek

The Portland Criterium race weekend features both the spicy, tight turns of the Park Blocks Criterium, and the wider open lanes of the Lloyd Criterium, which takes its name from the now-defunct shopping mall in the vicinity. Both venues made for exciting racing action and a sweet Portland showcase for our favorite Smith crit privateer — Ama Nsek. 

After taking the win on the 2025 edition, we inked a deal with crit racer Nsek to come on board as a privateer. This meant that, when he lined up, it was with the support of Smith Optics for both helmets and eyewear. And, of course, the race fans among our staff cheering him on! Ama’s aggressive and stylish ways were on full display as he commanded the front of the race on both days, taking a very close second place on Sunday. He was testing out the new POV eyewear in and around the bike racing setting. The Tortoise - Chroma Pop Low-Light Copper to warm up and see the features of the course, then Meteorite Crystal to toe the start line and compete. 

And while the actual racing was the highlight of both days, it is hard not to think of Portland itself as a participant in this weekend of events. The Soapbox Derby sees thousands of people head up to Mt. Tabor to watch crews of handmade derby cars go head-to-head on the twists and turns of the course. So, before any bike racing had even happened, Ama was treated to the extreme sport of Soapbox Derby. 

What’s your take on the PDX Crit scene? 

It’s one of the most challenging and technical courses I race on throughout the year (which is SO fun!), and the potential behind it is massive. Portland is one of the most bike-friendly cities with a developed community of recreational cyclists. 

It’s super well-organized, and the passion behind every member of staff is felt by the racers. 

What did you think of the POV eyewear and the two colors you tried? 

Flawless. Truly. They’re so nice you forget you have them on, but the only difference is that your eyesight is enhanced and you look GREAT for the camera. I initially went with the ChromaPop Low Light Copper as we were racing downtown, in and out of buildings at sunset, and I didn’t quite know how the trees and buildings were going to affect the overall light. However, I ended up deciding on the ChromaPop Low Light Rose Blue Mirror lenses because the sun was still up and I wanted an additional filter and it also helps me identify contrast in the fallen leaves on course and the rapidly changing light conditions. 

What was your favorite float at the Soapbox Derby? 

My favorite was the Clifford one and then the Speed Racer-type cars! To be honest, the crowds were my favorite part. Portland has some of the best community events. The whole shindig far exceeded my expectations! 

Favorite Non-Bike moment from the weekend? 

Hanging out with everyone from the Smith team after the race. Seeing everyone so happy and excited about my race, I didn’t know how to feel, truth be told. I’ve been doing this so long, there are times when it just feels like another day to me. 

Plus, the genuine emotions from the Smith team and hearing the exhilaration from the other side of the barrier really made me feel special.

I really am lucky to have this be my job and to see it excite people so much.
