Pursue Your Thrill: TranSierra Norte Is Building More Than Just MTB Trails

Written by Kyle von Hoetzendorff

The now iconic TranSierra Norte Enduro MTB Race got its start back in 2017 as a grassroots, multi-day race designed to bring awareness to the growing Oaxaca MTB trail system and support surrounding rural communities in the process. Now almost a decade later, it’s grown into a massive event where riders around the world gather to participate in The Day of the Dead and race along the lush North Mountain Range of Oaxaca.

The Genesis of TSN
Born out of a love for exploring the mountains on bike—riding from high elevations down into the valleys—and often ending their rides with a beer in a local shop, TSN founders Diego and Beto thought it was time to share their time-honored experience with others. With a background in organizing downhill and enduro races, the two founders created a “trans-style” event that combined adventure, racing, and most importantly, community.

Where TSN Is Headed Next
Today, TSN has evolved beyond just a race into a platform for curated mountain biking experiences. They organize tours, host brands, and create immersive riding events that connect people with Oaxaca’s landscapes and culture. In addition to community building, they also hope to continue developing and connecting trail networks across the Sierra, creating more access while preserving the natural and cultural integrity of the region. Perhaps the most important thing to note? Everything is done with a strong focus on sustainability and respect for local communities.

TSN & The Local Community
Oaxaca is known globally for its culture and cuisine, but its mountains offer a completely different experience. Mountain biking adds an outdoor dimension that complements the traditional tourism offerings, giving visitors a deeper and more diverse connection to the region. Cycling in Mexico has grown significantly in recent years, and while Oaxaca has strong XC and road cycling, there’s still room for mountain biking to grow. Local riders like Isaac “Torito” del Toro are helping bring attention to the sport, and hopefully this momentum leads to more opportunities and development for future athletes and the areas they ride in.
