Road Bike Helmets

How should a road bike helmet fit?

A road bike helmet should fit snugly but comfortably. It should sit level on your head, about one inch above your eyebrows, with no gaps between the helmet and your head. Use the adjustment dial to fine-tune the fit, and ensure the chin strap forms a "V" around your ears and allows two fingers of space under your chin. A properly fitted helmet stays in place without shifting during movement. Learn more about fitting your helmet.

What's the difference between a road and a mountain bike helmet?

Road bike helmets are built to be lightweight and aerodynamic, with more protection concentrated at the sides and front, the areas most commonly impacted in road crashes. Mountain bike helmets include external visors to block sun and low branches, along with more coverage at the sides and rear, since uneven trail terrain increases the chances of impact across a wider area of the head.

What is the 2-2-2 rule for bike helmets?

The 2-2-2 rule is a quick way to check helmet fit. There should be about two fingers of space between your eyebrows and the front of the helmet, two fingers forming a V-shape under each ear where the straps meet, and two fingers of room between the chin strap and your chin. If any of those checks feel off, adjust the straps and dial before you ride.

What’s the best road bike helmet for racing?

Look for an aerodynamic shape, since drag matters most when every second counts on race day. A dial-adjustable fit system keeps the helmet secure without stopping to readjust, and integrated eyewear storage lets you grab your shades without fumbling. The Smith Optics Ignite Mips® is built specifically for this: it pairs zonal KOROYD® coverage and Mips® for energy-absorbing impact protection in an aerodynamic shape designed to help you attack with speed.
